What is car key programming?
Many vehicle keys contain a transponder chip or electronic components that communicate with the vehicle's immobiliser. The vehicle checks the key's authorisation before allowing the engine to start.
Remote locking functions may also need to be paired or synchronised with the vehicle. The steps involved vary considerably between manufacturers, models and years.
When might programming be required?
- When adding a compatible spare key.
- When replacing a lost or damaged key.
- When a replacement remote or fob needs pairing.
- When a key is not being recognised, after initial checks have been made.
Programming is vehicle-specific
Not all keys are interchangeable, even when they look identical. Frequency, transponder type, key generation and vehicle security system all matter. We will need your vehicle details and information about the existing key situation before confirming whether a particular solution is suitable.
